Re: [VAL] Henschen replacement axles

Curtis,

It will not be a direct bolt in exchange of axles, but it shouldn't be all
that difficult either. I changed the axle on my '66 Globe Trotter about a
year and a half back. Of course you will have two axles to change. Contact
Inland RV for specifics. They will want to know what axles you currently
have, so get under your unit and look for a metal tag on your axles. They
will be dirty and hard to read, but write down everything or even perhaps
make a rubbing. While you are under there make a note as to whether your
shocks are mounted horizontally, or vertically. If they are mounted
horizontally you are in luck as the replacement axles will have the mounting
stud already welded on. Otherwise the mounting stud will be sent separate
and you and your welder will have to figure out the best place to weld it to
the axle plate.

This is a very worthwhile project though. It will increase the net carrying
capacity of your Trade Wind and if you opt for new brakes with the new axles
you will also increase the braking power of your unit. Ground clearance will
also increase to about one inch more than when your Trade Wind was brand
new. As far as mounting the axle the attaching bolt hole pattern is
different and some new holes will have to be drilled. But the slot in the
frame plate will accommodate the new axle with little or no grinding. If you
do most of the job on your own just be sure to use adequate safety jacks.
Try to place them where they will not interfere with maneuvering the old
axles out and new axles in.

The price for all of this will be about $850 per axle, or $1,700.
