Always turn the WH off before retiring. If it is hot at bedtime there
will be warm water for hand washing all night.
Dr. J has some good points too. If your WH has only a pressure relief
valve, not a temperature+pressure relief valve, it is important to put a
new relief valve in.
While you have the valve out, peek inside the tank with a penlite. If it
is not rusty, it most likely needs a new anode rod after 43 years. This
rod is made of magnesium and is sacrificial, that is, it corrodes instead
of the tank. If the magnesium is gone the tank will corrode. 
If the tank is already rusty, figure on a new water heater.
