I don't know what GM may have done in other vehicles, but my '79
Chevrolet half-ton diesel pickup (with the infamous 5.7 L Oldsmobile
diesel V8) had a Turbo Hydromatic 400 transmission. "Manifold vacuum"
was simulated for the modulator with a small vacuum pump and a plastic
proportioning valve controlled by the throttle linkage.
