Re: [VACList] Acrylite vs. Lexan

Hey John:

The material (Lexan) never has to "take on the contour of the shell". It
only has to close sufficiently to allow the grabber mechanisms to engage the
window clips and pull the pane in. When cranked in, the pane is pulled
against and bends to the contour of the shell. I have found that the larger
windows (29" - 39") tend to meet this requirement. I have one 17" over the
galley sink that is so light that it does not bend as much from gravity and
just barely misses the grabbers. In this case, I partly close a grabber and
then go outside and manually engage it. Then crank the pane in until the
other grabber can engage it and pull it in. Again it conforms to the curve
of the window frame once cranked in. It has been said on the list that one
can heat-bend the panes but I have had no desire to do so. It's simply not
a problem.

As for Acrylite, I recently bought some at TAP and can say that IMO it
scratches as easily as Lexan. As for the claim that you can use steel wool
on it and not leave scratches.....I don't think so.

Where DID you get this hokey advice?
