Externally, while moving slowly on a gravel road, engage the manual
brake switch.  It should slide both wheels evenly.

You can also have someone step on the brake while creeping forward and
listen for the hum and 'chunk' of the magnet, actuator arm and linkage
doing its bit.

Best check is to remove the hubs. Shoe wear and magnet wear can be
checked visually. Use this as an opportunity to repack the wheel
bearings.  The shoes are tightened using the standard type adjusters
accessed from the back of the wheel.
