Jo Ann - it's interesting following along with the thinking on your project -
you've inspired a lot of input to be shared from a lot of different
perspectives.
That's what makes this site so interesting!

Have you researched the formica angle further?  If not - there are a variety
of formica companies out there - one well known one is Wilson Art.

The history of that company is pretty fascinating.  But keeping to your
project - do you know that now - if you are willing to go for the cost - 
laminate can be produced in just about whatever visual  look you want - i.e. 
a photo, artwork, illustrations... can be transferred to a laminate. If you are 
looking to go a custom route - this really opens up the possibilities.
