Brian's fix is in fact a plug, if you will.  This plug patch can be made
even stronger if it the top grain of the new wood is laid 90 degrees
perpendicular to the original floor.

The beveled or stepped edge of the patch held in place with epoxy and laid
perpendicular to the old floor will be much stronger than the original in
that one area.

The rule of thumb for repairs is to make as strong or stronger than the
original.  Can't go wrong unless you make is so strong that it won't flex
like the old and in that case it would break.
