Re: [VACList] Wood bending...
A marine biologist friend of mine built a 30' sail boat in his back yard
from a set of blueprints about 24"x36" which really amazed me. He bent the
oak ribs for the hull by boiling the straight ribs in a black iron pipe
capped on one end and filled with water that he heated in a fire in his back
yard. After the wood had "soaked" a while he took it out and bent it to
shape using a jig he also made. I don't remember the jig part but it worked.
Slow but it worked. The ribs were substantial (maybe like 1 1/2"x2" and 4-5
feet long or longer. I didn't expect it to bend but it did.
