Re: replacing holding tank

Joy has given a thorough answer, but here are few
additional details that might help.

The ring that Joy described sits above the floor. It
passes through the hole in the floor to hold the
opening of the tank firmly beneath the toilet. (A
good thing indeed!)

There was a second, larger ring on my unit that was
placed around the first ring. It was held to the top
of the floor with wood screws. Two (or was it four?)
bolts came up from it. These bolts passed through the
base of the toilet. The toilet is then held down with
nuts. This is much like the arrangement in your
house, except that the flange is normally all one
piece that is glued to the drain pipe. My toilet was
sealed against the inner ring with a wax seal (Johnny
O-Ring).

Joy was kind enough to give me the special tool used
for removing the threaded inner ring. He fabbed one
for himself, being the handy-man that he is. My
concern at this point is that you make no mention of
such a tool, but have already removed your tank. How
did you get it loose from the ring/floor? You could
certainly use my/Joy's tool to put it back, but it
sounds as though you might have cut the tank.
