To answer your questions:

1. No, Yes, Yes

2. NO, NO

Easiest? 3M makes an adhesive remover for contact cement. What you 
want to do *is* possible but it would be a real PITA to do. But, since 
you are set on doing this take your time and you will enjoy the results. 
You do realilze you are somewhat destroying the "vintage value" of  this 
Airstream, right? I'm sure you thought of that otherwise you wouldn't 
have asked. Right?
