Paul,
The single most satisfying thing you can do is to use those windows as 
they were designed to be, that is, used. Not opening them is not the answer, 
but your precautions are right on as is common sense. If they break, they
break, and you will join the majority. Even worse is not allowing strangers
or children to "touch something" for fear of them breaking them, unless you
have a museum piece. How boring and stressful would that be? Many restorers
will disagree but I feel if you use something regularly, it will pay you
back with reliability. Does your holding tank leak like mine? :-)
