[VAC] Door Gasket

The instructions that came with my new door gasket indicate the gasket goes
on the door, not on the frame and the picture indicates it goes right in the
corner formed where the uninsulated part of the door is joined to the boxed
out (and I assume insulated ) part of the door. But the back ends of the
rivets are there. I would think all those rivet backs would prevent the
gasket from adhering properly. In addition there is at least one area on
the door and an entire side of the door in the door that is not close enough
when closed to hit a gasket installed that way. Our trailer had so many
gaskets over the years that I have no hint as to what the original
installation was like. Is there a specific "proper" location for these
gaskets? My guess is just to the outside of the rivet backs but then the
gasket does not get any side support as shown in the installation guide.
(The gasket and instructions came from a reputable Airstream place and I was
told it was the correct style for our trailer.)
