Your sovereign should have an ammeter on the console in the trailer.  My 76
did.  Just hook up the truck to the trailer and turn the ignition to on.
You should see a fluctuation on the ammeter if it is charging.  If it is not
charging then start the engine and look again.  Odds are that it starts
charging when the ignition is turned to on.
