Mitch,

If you are having to strain while setting the spring bars, you're not doing
it right.

While the trailer is hitched to the ball, spring bars _not_ tensioned, run
the tongue jack as high as you can.  Then hook up the spring bars, using
moderate effort.  When you lower the jack, the spring bars will become
tensioned.

Be careful.  Those things can hurt you.  You should never have a spring bar
under tension when hitching/unhitching.
