Hi Tim,
No, you aren't the first or only one
to encounter this phenomenon. Three years + ago, my son told me about a
"little bitty" Airstream he spotted in a neighboring town. He had even talked to
the owner, and told him that I was always looking for an oldie. Long story
short, based on want ads supplied by his son, the owner decided the
trailer was worth $6-8 K. This was a 1960 17' Pacer. It hadn't been on the road
in at least a decade, but was mostly all there. When I asked for specifics on
his pricing, he showed me the print-outs his son had sent him. Surprise!! they
were all for highly polished, restored or "improved" Bambi's, mostly from the
West Coast. The owner was very tenacious about his asking
price, however, and we never struck a deal before he passed away last
Summer.
There is a happy (for me) ending to this
story. I contacted his son, who initially wanted the same price, UNTIL I sent
him to R.J Dial's website with it's pricing guidelines. It is now mine and I
have started to get it road worthy and a full resto is contemplated for the near
future.
In a word, persistence!
Walt
