Brad,

I have read that a visual re-certification is good for 5 years, a hydrostatic
test is good for 12, which is the same as a new tank.  Not sure if that's for
steel only, or for aluminum as well.  If your tank is dated mid 70s you are WAY
out of date.  Of course the same guy who will re-cert your tank for 5 years is
the guy who has been filling it without looking at the date in the first
place.  Makes you wonder, doesn't it.  To get a hydro test you will probably
have to go to a welding supply house, or possibly a propane dealer, not a
camping supply or hardware store.  YMMV.
