         IMHO- basically, the first and foremost thing you need to look at 
is the integrity of the combustion chamber. As long as it is whole and 
sealed, the rest can be safely kludged (more or less). Motors, gas valves, 
etc. can be modified (though there are certainly safety concerns here), but 
as long as the chamber is good, it is doable.

         But.. I would *carefully* inspect the chamber.
