[VAC] Re: Axles, Interior Panels, A/S Liner

Joe,

It seems that in 1961 Airstream changed to the dura torque axle. So I am making the assumption that all 1960 and older Airstreams came with a leaf spring suspension. One list member has a '61with leaf springs.

While my 1960 has a painted inner aluminum skin, the interior end caps are not made of aluminum. I do not know when Airstream made the change from an all aluminum interior skin to a partial. I would think that a quick look could answer your question. If the interior end caps are constructed of segments then most likely it is constructed of aluminum. If the interior end caps are one piece then they are not. Bud Cooper, the Vintage Airstream Club's founder, may know for sure when the aluminum to fiberglass change occured, but I doubt that there is a definite dividing line. Upon viewing my '60 Overlander he seemed suprised to find that it had fiberglass.

I think that Bud owns a Liner and I am sure that he would love to discuss it with you. Bud can be reached at: Ruc00p@aol.com
