[VAC] Re: Tongue Jack

I want to thank my friends on the VAC list for the successful rescue of
my tongue jack with the failed gears. As several people suggested, it
is a Super Jack made by H&H Engineering. Jim Greene gave me a source
for parts: www.barkermfg.com. I ordered the 2nd and 3rd gear cluster
($22.93) along with a hand crank ($10.53) that will be helpful if the
battery goes dead or the gear fails again. I had the parts in my hand
in less than a week, along with a helpful sheet that describes the limit
switch re-timing procedure that is needed following the replacement of
the gears. The gear replacement and re-timing probably took all of 15
minutes. Nice to have the jack working again.

As an aside, someone suggested fixing the gear by pinning the fiber
outer portion to the inner steel hub. I looked at the gearbox carefully
and decided that this gear cluster is a mechanical fuse intended to
fail under high torque in order to protect the rest of the jack.
Pinning the fiber gear to the steel hub might defeat this safety device.

Thanks again for the help.
