Somebody makes hydrogen 'catalyzers'... little stick-on thingies that one
puts on the battery case to absorb off-gassed hydrogen. I used to use them
in underwater applications, where a loose battery lead could cause a major
explosion due to the fact that the batteries were themselves sealed in an
airtight container... but i seem to recall that most off-gassing occurs
during charging, and hydrogen being lighter than air, it wouldn't collect in
the bottom of the battery box. So, vents in the top or top/side should be
sufficient in normal applications. The catalyzers were supposed to be
replaced at fairly frequent intervals, too, and it wasn't apparent when they
were 'full'. Hard to say if they actually did anything, but i never blew up
any batteries...
