Stuart & Bonnie,

The sofa bed (or gaucho) is pretty much the same in all vintage Airstreams.
The bottom pulls out and the backrest sits in the area just opened. Our '60
has handle looking things in the shelf to keep the backrest in the upright
position while traveling. The back of the backrest has two hooks that sit in
the handles. A very simple design.
