[VAC] Re: 1950 Airstream

Hi Chuck & Elaine:

Thanks for the photos of your 1950 Airstream. What a
cutie! It is a 24' Cruiser model. The galvanized piece of
sheet metal across the lower front is a non-factory rock
guard, installed by the owner or perhaps a dealer or RV
place. If installed a while after the initial purchase, it
may cover up dinged aluminum underneath that was dimpled by
rocks, pebbles & debris kicked up by the tow vehicle or by
vehicles passing in the opposite direction (think gravel
truck). If installed when the trailer was new, the skin
underneath may be unblemished.

In either event, I'd leave it in place to protect the
trailer in the future. But if the galvanized metal bothers
you, it could be replaced with a sheet of aluminum, then
shined up to better match the rest of the trailer.

Thanks for sharing the photos. That is a wonderful
trailer you have, one of the earliest with an "A" (or "H" or
ladder) frame underneath the body. Did you get the images I
sent you last week from the 1950/51 Airstream catalog of the
24' Cruiser?

Best regards,

Fred Coldwell
