[VAC] Re Axle Replacement

Usually you only replace the axle if the spindle gets scored or the axle
cross-member gets bent, but if you're still up for it, it can be done -
but will require 2 people at times. It requires the trailer to be
jacked up and placed on 4 tall jack stands - 2 near each end of the
frame.

Drop the axle onto support blocks by removing the 4 leaf spring bolts.
Getting the SOB out from under the trailer will require many swear
words. Once out you can replace the axle by removing the 4 large U
bolts, carefully noting the lateral position and dimensions. The new
axle has to go back on with the springs exactly spaced as such.

If you are replacing any leaves and shackles, now is the time. You can
get them at utility trailer places (yellow pages), and are usually
replaced as sets. When all cars had leaf spring suspensions, there were
auto shops on every block that repaired and replaced leaves - now is
just down to these trailer places and welding shops.
If you are replacing the whole leaf assembly, including the bottom
plate, you will have to have new shock mounts welded on in the same
position as the old.

If your frame mounts (ears) are bent, worn or the holes elongated- new
ones have to be welded on. If using all new springs, you may have to
relocate the ears if they are longer or shorter. Be sure to test fit the
springs before trying to install the whole assembly

Reverse procedure to reinstall (more swear words).

Best of luck!
