[VAC] 64 GT home OK

Hey folks, I'm just following up on my earlier message about
going to get my "new" '64 Globetrotter. Got it home sunday
evening, after traveling 6 hours over 3 major mountain
passes here in Colorado. No mishaps to report. After
building a new plug & testing for lights & brakes, I bolted
on my torsion bar brackets taken from the Safari. Duct tape
on a couple of loose windowpanes, then hit the road. It
towed better than I thought it would! Good tires, and the
owner had repacked the wheel bearings himself recently.
Basically, I am very pleased with my new acquisition. While
I expect it to be a project, I think I've got a good base to
start on. Upon pulling up the carpet, I found that somebody
already has replaced the whole floor! It seems to be 5/8"
plywood, not treated, but I can live with that. I will
re-caulk the seams before new surface goes on. Window
hardware needs much work/replacement. The front window is
missing the frame- there is just Plexiglas inserted with
silicone caulk , and makeshift rock guard. But the skin is
going to be beautiful, once polished- I just know it. 14x25
top vent has been capped- I will want to get that opened
up. Has a rear A/C unit which is still undetermined as to
functionality. Anybody ever hear of a "Summer" brand? Water
heater looks almost new (replacement), and furnace looks
unused.
Tested water today, ever so gradually, and do have one leak-
split copper. Black water tank has been flushed and is left
full of water to look for leaks overnight. Major plumbing
project will be toilet, since it is not even anchored down.
Will test propane tomorrow- if you don't hear form me again,
you'll know it did not go well....
I plan to redo the interior, as somebody got to it once
already, and it ain't pretty. Lovely orig. oak is now tacky
paneling. Ugh! My challenge is to make a dinette, which I
wish could go opposite of galley, but water tank & wheel
well prevent this.
Immediate goal is to get it marginally habitable , so that I
can go to the rally in Estes Park, meet some of you fine
People, and maybe get some ideas on how to redo the
interior.
Overall, I think I can find a way to use this to rid my
budget of excess cash for a while.
