Gerald,
 I use either a 3/4" drive socket or a pipe wrench, either with a
cheater on the handle to give me at least 3' of lever to reef on. A ball
stem of 1" should be able to stand 300 ft. lbs. or more of torque
(threads lightly greased, of course) and you do really, really, want
that stuff TIGHT. A pair of Channel Lock (tm) pliers is not going to get
the job done.
