Bob,
Check out polypropylene fiber carpet. In recent years they
have been able to produce a carpet with the feel of a good wool or nylon, but
with amazing properties.
First, the color is an integral part of the plastic fiber, so
it won't fade.
Second, polypropylene is darn near inert, so to clean it you
can wash it or even spray on chlorine bleach (to remove animal stains, vomit, or
any other obnoxious stain). Clorox doesn't bother it!
Maintenance wise, no other carpet fiber can touch it.
I know this sounds like a blah institutional style material,
as exciting as a soggy dish rag, but not so. The colors and styles available are
very contemporary. You would never guess that this is the same fiber used
to make that shiny yellow rope. Your friends will have a fit when you go to
clean it with chlorine bleach.
