Perhaps rubbing of the patina of an old Tiffany lamp is the wrong analogy.  
Recently, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was restored to recapture it's 
original color scheme and texture.  A neighbor of mine stripped and repainted 
his 60's Mustang, it looks great.  The same goes for a polished Airstream.
