bought some for filling small holes, topping off rivets, etc... but i don't
know how it polishes.

The problem with aluminum is that it can get very hot very fast, and
permanently discolor. I'd probably test it on some scrap, then on the
trailer, and then replace the panel like i probably should have in the first
place. Other alternatives might be to rivet on a 'patch', or put in an
'access panel'...
