The most common cause seems to be moisture. Drum shoes seem to be more prone to
it. Unused for extended periods allows them to absorb moisture and swell
slightly. This makes them a little grabby until they dry out. Here in the
mountain West we see little of the problem. Two years ago when I was taking
coaches to Oregon for recoating, the return trips invariably started with grabby
brakes. Dragging the brakes off and on before I got out on to the main road
stopped the grabbing.
