Bob,

That is the ONLY way to handle "blackwater" waste.  If you leave the
valve open, the solids will collect in the bottom of the tank, while the
liquids will flush right out.  Eventually the collected solids will plug
up every thing, putrefying all the while.  NOT pretty to correct.  Been
there, done that, don't wanna go again!
