Can't help you on the carpet, unless I did pull up the 1973 original
which was just stapled around the edges, not glued. Underneath is
plywood, and probably some rotten places... better be sure you don't
have leaks before you do the floor over. .

For the smoke odor, or any other odor, even toxic fumes, douse
everything in baking soda, lots and lots. Let it sit for a day and then
vacuum it up. If it still smells, douse again, and then wash all
surfaces with baking soda. It is the best , safest cleaner around.
