[VAC] Re: Radiant flooring

Toby, you may be thinking of the old-style radiant floor systems, which used
rigid pipe. Modern methods use flexible tubing, used over practically any
type of sub-floor, and a layer of thinset mortar, or similar material,
'floated' over and between the tubing, primarily to hold the tubing in
place. Other, lighter materials than thinset may be used (expanding foam?)
to do the same thing, and to diffuse, and, to a lesser extent 'hold' the
heat. The top layer, often a laminate floor, also holds and diffuses the
heat.

These systems are 'closed', and the water is a glycol mix to prevent
freezing and/or bacterial growth. Water is recirculated through a
heat-transfer system, and manifolds used to create 'zones' so that the floor
nearest the heat exchanger is not warmer than floor zones further away...

Although it may appear that i'm speaking with some authority, this is simply
what i've gleaned from watching Rich Trethewey on the TEEvee...
