[VAC] Re: New to a '64 Globetrotter

Dave: As one who advised against touring with the Toyota, I must say I also
agree with you. Cars can pull trailers just fine. My '86 Caprice wagon, 305
4v with an aftermarket trans cooler, equalizer, and sway control pulls
great. Unloaded, it gets 20 mpg at 75 mph, towing, it gets about 10 at 60.
Best part, it rides and handles like a car, holds my whole family, and cost
me $1500 to buy 4 years ago, and could be sold for the same today. Do
cummins Dodges breeze past me in overdrive while I'm howling along at 4,500
revs in second and sucking down small birds through the secondaries as I
climb mountain grades? Yes. Would I pay twenty times what my caprice cost me
to be in their rig? Nope. To each their own. But you're right. Think of the
rigs that towed these things when new. It can be done. That said, a long
wheelbase, heavy vehicle, beefy brakes and frame, and an understressed V8 or
long-stroke, torquey six will be safer and hold up a lot longer.
