The reason I have been given for the recommendation not to install a 
dead bolt has to do with the thickness of current dead bolts. The 
position is that it is necessary to remove to much material from the 
door frame to accommodate the bolt. This weakens the door frame 
excessively. The recommendation was not specific as to year, only that 
new dead bolts are to large for a safe installation..
