[VAC] Re: Mirror shine/old aluminum (Was: Back in the saddl

Achieving a mirror finish is little more than making the surface as smooth
as possible. The newer skins aren't as smooth to begin with as the older
skins were. The differences in alloy may affect the material 'color' some
in the mirror finish.

The newer skins just need a sanding step to be brought to smooth, where the
old skins (depending on condition) just need a polish down to smooth.

This is my conjecture. The fifties skins polishing "better" may just mean it
takes less work to get results relative to the new skins. The vintage group
could easily pick this kind of thing up and eventually transform it into a
sort of folklore which adds to the charm of what they love already.
