They were  reasonably shining but not like they can now be polished up to 
be. The problem with patina was that it was oxidation and wasn't much you 
could do to keep it under control although I suspect some polishing of 
sorts took place with some owners.  Products like Metall were developed 
and if used often could keep a  clear finish up.  However, after they 
start putting on the clear coats suspected folks expected  this would 
protect the finish. It did up to a point but most folks forgot that the 
clearcoat needed protecting to until they noted it coming off.
