I recall vividly while trying to extend some Reynolds screen frames that
I had cut too short... Watching the ends of the original aluminum fall
away just as the "welding" rod was beginning to work.  

For window frames probably the only effective splice is a variation on
the corner where some aluminum piece is made to fit inside the extrusion
or other formed shape.
