I'm pretty sure what Ralph's getting at is that the compressor is the
culprit. The motor driving the compressor will eat up amperage like crazy if
it's old, tired, or 'binding' somehow. I would imagine that the hoped-for
solution would be cleaning/lubricating the compressor drive train... I
forget if these are belt-driven compressors... maybe the belt's too tight?
Alternatively, if the thermostat isn't cutting off the compressor motor when
max cool has been reached, it could continue to draw current at higher
levels until the breaker trips.
