Why a 6 volt lamp? If you want a dull glow why not a 24 volt lamp on 12
volts, or a gang of small 24 volt lamps... The incandescent lamp
efficiency is rotten, adding a voltage divider will lower the efficiency
by another 50% or more... You should only need one resistor in that
divider (another 6 volt lamp of the same size would be a perfect fit)
and the efficiency will be just 50% of the raw lamp efficiency.

The smallest compact fluorescent in a tinted plexiglass tube could give
any color pretty much, with greater efficiency but still not an
overwhelming amount of light and take less battery current.
