Ed, is this the original A/C?  My 66 had a fan shaft penetration through the roof
with a donut style foam seal that could leak if you dumped water inside the
condenser coils/blower unit on the roof. This is normally protected by the
shroud, and is also located at the crest of the crowned roof, so any rain water
that might get in there would for the most part drain away vs. seep past the seal
and down the shaft.  But running a hose up in there would be a different story.
If you pull the shroud off, or have already, the seal is directly beneath the
condenser coil fan blades surrounding the shaft where it penetrates the roof.
Easy to cut up your hands trying to reach down in there because of the proximity
of the finned condenser coils.
