About all split rims are good for is annoying tire shops who fear for
their workman's comp insurance premium going out of sight if they work
with split rims. Split rims have been known to split when airing up
after installing a tire and to propel the loose pieces fast enough to
maim or decapitate people too close to the task. At a minimum they have
to be aired up with a remote controlled air hose and while in a cage.
But that cage is generally sized for a large truck tire, not an
Airstream tire so the rim pieces might slip through the bars of the
cage.

Some varieties of split rims used on 3/4 ton trucks in one era had a
propensity to come apart while going down the road.

Just a bad idea that got worse with age, rust, and wear.
