The clear coat will keep the freshly polished aluminum from oxidizing. How
long it does this depends, my polisher claims it will last approx 10 years.
The down side is that you loose some of the shinyness, the upside is that
you will not have to polish it for a decade, but you will need to wax it
with Walbernize once or twice a year. Some people love to polish their
trailers, I love to be out using mine, at present I don't have time for
both, so I opted for the clear coat and a semi-annual afternoon for a wax
job.
