Not exactly sure what you mean by step sanding but when you get down to
fine sanding try using the hand held sanders such as Craftsman, model
315.277011.  Does 14,000orbets per minute. Does some "fine" polishing on
flat surfaces.  In terms of real fine grit you might look at emory cloth
which gets down to 1500.  I have used the 400,600, and 1500 to work out
scratches on the outside skins (using it wet) but suspect it will work on
wood surfaces in a dry state.
