Re: [VAC] old camper smell and a fix.

We bought a '73 - 31ft, center bath in Oct. of last year. After we hsd it
towed to our camping spot and it sat for a week closed up it also had the
"old camper smell". Some of the smell was methane gas coming from the
holding tank. I bought some 'tank freshener' at camping world and some rv
anti-freeze. Now every time I dump the black water tank I add 4 oz of the
freshener to the tank. When we go back to the 'other world' to earn a
living I run water into the toilet until the tank is full and then dump it,
refill it and dump it again. Then I shut off the water, drain hoses and open
the drain valves on the trailer, then I put 4 oz of the freshener and 2 cups
of anti freeze in the toilet, flush, 1 cup of anti freeze in the toilet and
DO NOT flush, it sits in the bowl and acts as an air block to keep fumes
from entering the trailer. I also put 2 oz of the freshener in the sink and
then some anti freeze (separate gray water tank). The next time we are up to
the site one of the first things I do after turning on the heat and water is
flush the toilet until there is approximately 2 inches of water in the tank.
The tank freshener does more than deoderize, it also helps break down human
waste and paper and is safe for all septic and sewer systems. My father in
law, who full timed it for 17 years after retiring, told me about this
system to keep the tank from clogging. He never had a tank clog up he told
me enough stories about others that did that I know I don't want it to
happen to me. Once it warms up I'll skip the anti freeze, but for now it
gets down into the low 30's and upper 20's at night. Hope this helps with
the camper smell. The other thing to look for is mold. If you have it, kill
it!
