Erin,
I don't know how A/S were constructed but I've had 2 other brands of that
vintage and here's how they worked:   The front part of the couch lifted,
unlocked and folded down flat ( well sort of) Storage for bedding under
couch. The second couch was lifted slightly and slid forward, resting on
legs to form a bed. The mattras was of foam and folded to make a couch,
unfolded to make the bed.
