Erin,
All the ones from the '50-'60's were made of wood, and were simple
sliding mechanisms.   I'll sketch the design & some important dimensions
from a '65 and send it to you as a .gif image later in the week.  
Hopefully someone with a '50's coach could do the same - I would like to
compare the actual design evolution.  I noticed that Jim D.'s '68
construction was even a little different than the early -mid '60's
layout.  

This question comes up quite often as subsequent owners try to undo
prior "remodeling" blunders.  It would be nice to have some sketches
available to send out.
