Hi Gerald,
In the late 50s, I squished a front corner.
Since then, I've always used a longer
receiver bar and never squished another
corner.

Suburbans and Vans are higher than 
Sedans at the rear corners. Combine that 
with turning sharply while exiting a gas
station's dipping driveway and -- squish.

Twenty years ago, when I started using
our 3/4 ton Van, I intentionally, slowly
and carefully jack knifed the trailer in
a supermarket parking lot to see the 
clearance. Result, I went to the 18" bar. 

I wish all problems were so easily solved.
