I don't think fires are common in travel trailers.  When they do happen, it
is usually due to LP gas.  If you worry, just turn off the gas.  We leave
our dogs in our unit and leave the gas on (hot water heater and at times
heater).  No problem.  We have a LPG detector mounted low in the unit and a
fire alarm.  I think what people here are talking about is caution.
 
So ... don't worry, purchase a propane detector and a fire alarm and leave
yourself a way out.
