Just an FYI.  An Airstream dealer installed a new Dometic unit in our 1971
Tradewind.  They made no new openings, but they did recommend the fan and
put that in.  When I first turned it on, the temp went down to 22 degrees.
I had to turn it down to get to 36.  It is larger than then original unit
and works great.
