Re: [VAC] Carpeting Replacement and Gas Lamp Question

Replacing an awning head casting is pretty straight forward, but you must be
careful. The Zip Dee design places the tension spring in the rear (or left) end of
the awning tube. This spring assembly is the size and nearly the length of a garage
door spring. When it is wound up under tension there is a lot of energy stored in
it. The recommended procedure is to unwind the spring before replacing parts. It
takes a minimum of two people, one to hold the tube up while the other unwinds it.
This must be done with the awning fully open without the secondary rafter in place.
We often will remove the main rafter arm from the head casting and use a short tool
to control the spring as you wind/unwind it. You will want to count the number of
turns as you unwind it. When you rewind it, add one turn.
